Let’s Talk Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22 and it marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

Happy Earth Day!

What a time to celebrate Mother Earth as spring begins to bloom and she starts to show off a little after a long dormant winter. Earth Day is not only meant to bring awareness to environmental problems that we are facing but it is also a reminder for many communities to gather together to clean up litter, plant trees, or simply enjoy the wonder of nature.

What can you do to celebrate Earth Day? Here are some ideas!

-Support the Pollinators by planting flowers and plants that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.

-Pick up trash and plastic in your local park or beach or even just when you are walking down the street.

-Conserve water.

-Look for non-toxic products to use around the house. For instance, we stopped using dryer sheets and got these wool dryer balls* instead.

-Compost your food scraps so they don’t end up in the landfill. We take ours to the farmers market each week. Look for resources in your city. It’s very easy when you have a cute bin* to store the scraps until you can take them.

-Look for biodegradable and non-toxic household products you can swap. If You Care has tons of products like that, we use their parchment paper* when making sourdough.

-This should be a no-brainer but Don’t Litter.

-Learn about the real environmental problems we are facing. There are tons of blogs and documentaries you can educate yourself with.

-Plant or support a local community garden.

-Get outside today and remind yourself what a beautiful world we live in.

-Switch to reusable bags* if you haven’t already. We got the cutest market basket to use for shopping.

-Encourage the use of reusable utensils, trays and dishes. And if you are a coffee drinker, take your reusable cup* with you on your morning or afternoon coffee run. I’ve been using a glass water bottle* for years trying to stay away from plastic bottles as much as I can.

-Another no-brainer that was pounded into our Gen X psyches….turn off the lights when you leave the room.

- Get outside and kick off your shoes to get some grounding in. When you make direct contact of your skin to the Earth’s natural electric charge it gives you a slew of health benefits, including improved sleep, normalizing the day-night cortisol rhythm, reduced pain, and shifting the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic toward parasympathetic activation.

-I know we all love our cars, but today and maybe a little more often, why not ride your bike, walk, or take public transit when you can? The benefits are two-fold, you get some exercise and there would be fewer cars on the road polluting the air and guzzling gas.

-Adopt an endangered animal. I’m fond of the manatees being a Florida girl but you can adopt gorillas, rhinos, and sea turtles as well.

What are you going to do to celebrate Earth Day? You’ll find me frolicking among the cherry blossoms chasing the butterflies and bees.
