Let’s Talk Godwinks

I love it when God Winks. I love it even more when Scott gets to see it. He’s winked at me so many times over the years that I not have come to expect it but it doesn’t surprise me per se. I know when I’m open God is there. I know He likes to show off and shower blessings even over the most mundane of things. Scott and I were in LA for a couple of days for a shoot. We had parked ourselves at our favorite seats overlooking the bustling kitchen at Love&Salt in Manhattan Beach. We were satisfactorily weary from a long day of shooting. It’s a good tired. One from doing what you love and giving all you’ve got to make everyone’s experience a good one. Much like I would imagine the chef, that we were watching work feels after a long shift over very hot burners.

We were sipping the first of a couple of cocktails when the subject of our 8 a.m. flight came up. I half-jokingly said I would really like to get upgraded to Mint since it was such an early flight. We had the blessing of getting bumped up a few months before and it was pure delight. I was giddy that morning wanting to soak in every aspect of the upgrade. The massage chair that transformed into a reasonably comfortable reclining chair. The soft blanket and pillow, the dop kit filled with goodies not to mention the delicious Bloody Mary prior to taking off that helped assuage the hangover I was nursing that morning thanks to a friend’s heavy-handed martinis the night before. So when we started discussing the logistics of the next morning’s flight, what time we needed to be on the shuttle to get to LAX, whether we had checked in online yet, etc I just said……I think tomorrow we should get upgraded. Scott looked at me with his usual smirk when I say something he thinks is straight out of one of my personal growth podcasts. I smirked back and said, “you know sometimes you just have to put it out there.” We moved on to other topics, enjoying our well-crafted dinner and doing what we as a couple do best, eat and talk.

5:45 came very early that next morning and while I was thankful we had made it an early evening, three days on the ground running makes for a weary Scott and Michelle. We packed and hopped on the shuttle with plenty of time to make our flight and as we boarded Scott commented that it “looked like we weren’t getting bumped to Mint this am.” “No, no it doesn’t,” I said with a shrug. We boarded when they called Mosaic and got settled into seats 19 A and C unpacking our water, Spark, snacks, books, and headphones. Our seatmate joined us and Scott moved over to B so we could sit next to each other. And then, when we weren’t even paying attention an angel walked up and inquired if we were Mr. and Mrs. Montgomery. I assumed it was the flight attendant with her customary welcome for Mosaic customers. Nope, she leaned over and handed us two new boarding passes for seats 5D and F. “You’ve been upgraded, enjoy” I am pretty sure I expressed my love for her at least 3 times. As we gathered our stuff I just beamed, thankful knowing God is not about naming it and claiming it and He’s not a genie in a bottle granting wishes but He is generous and He is cheeky. As we plopped all of our stuff into Row 5 Scott shot me his other look, the one he gives me when my optimism and child-like belief pays off. He joked that I needed to speak our lottery win into existence next. Ok but for that day I was going to enjoy that Mint seat and be grateful for the little things cause you can’t let those go unnoticed or unappreciated.
