Let’s Talk Morning Pages

I learned of Morning Pages when I read Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist’s Way. Sit down in the morning and write three pages of longhand, stream-of-consciousness thoughts. According to Julia, “Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritize and synchronize the day at hand.” When I have gone back to mine my own morning pages I find little nuggets I want to expand on and lots of words dedicated to the weather.

Morning journaling is a great way to dump clutter from your brain so that you can start the day with a fresh perspective. Instead of dooomscrolling and setting off the fight or flight chemicals in your body, you can take control and set yourself up for a productive mindset that you control of. I’ve written about my plans for the day, notes about how cute my cat is, the dreams that ran through my head the night before and yes more than a few entries about the snow falling outside the window or how sunny but frigid it might be. Maybe I’m not awake enough when I write to actually make sense of my thoughts or maybe that is the point. Get all of the distracting tidbits out to make room for more creative thinking.

Sometimes, sitting down to a blank page can feel intimidating, and in those times, a list of journal prompts could be helpful. I’ve created a freebie if you want to try your hand at morning journaling but aren’t sure where to start. You can revisit the questions weekly, monthly, or yearly. I’ve picked topics that coincide with the topics I discuss here on the blog, like Consistency, Movement, Healthy Aging, and Personal Growth. Comment below or join the mailing list, and I’ll send it your way. The beginning of the new year is a great time to get your thoughts down on paper so you have a starting line to measure your progress against in the coming months.
