Try Me-Dry Brushing

The Benefits of Dry Brushing: A Simple Ritual for Midlife Wellness

As we move through midlife, and especially with the fluctuations in hormone levels as we transition through menopause, our bodies undergo changes that can affect our skin, circulation, and overall well-being. One simple yet effective self-care practice that I have been incorporating is dry brushing. This is an ancient technique that involves using a natural-bristle brush on dry skin in gentle, sweeping motions. It’s a quick and easy habit with significant benefits, especially for midlife women.

Why Dry Brushing?

1. Boosts Circulation and Lymphatic Drainage

As we age, circulation can slow down, leading to puffiness and sluggish lymphatic flow. Who else wakes up with tight rings after too much restaurant food and not enough water? Just me? Dry brushing stimulates blood flow and encourages lymphatic drainage, helping to reduce fluid retention and promote detoxification.

2. Exfoliates for Smoother Skin

Hormonal changes in midlife can lead to drier, less elastic skin. It’s even worse in cold climates like NY when humidity in winter is at an all time low and heaters are blasting everywhere from the subway to Target. Dry brushing removes dead skin cells, revealing softer, smoother skin and enhancing the absorption of moisturizers.

3. Supports Cell Renewal and Collagen Production

Regular exfoliation can stimulate cell renewal and improve skin texture, helping to maintain a healthy glow even as collagen production slows down.

4. Encourages Relaxation and Mindfulness

Taking a few moments each day for dry brushing can become a meditative self-care ritual, reducing stress and helping you feel more connected to your body.

Never done dry brushing? Here are some best practices to get started.

- Use a brush with natural bristles and a comfortable handle.

-Always brush on dry skin before showering.

-Start at your feet and move upward in gentle, circular motions toward the heart.

-Avoid sensitive areas, broken skin, or varicose veins.

-Follow with a shower and apply a nourishing moisturizer or body oil.

-Dry brush 2-3 times per week for best results.

By incorporating dry brushing into your midlife wellness routine, you can enjoy its skin-smoothing, circulation-boosting, and relaxation benefits all in just a few minutes a day!
